Architecture ZA Conference 2015

Architects and designers from around the world will gather in Johannesburg from the 24-26th of September for the fifth Architecture ZA Conference (AZA2015).
This year’s theme is Future City and will focus on the development of Johannesburg and the shaping of South Africa’s urban landscape for positive change and economic development. The conference enables architects and designers from around the world to discuss matters of general interest and identify many concerns in the industry and work together towards solutions. Two main questions will be under debate this year, 1) How have cities been shaped and how will they continue to shape our modern world? 2) What are the key issues challenging future cities, in particular, South African cities, and how can they be overcome using innovative, elegant solutions?

Community Service in Hermanus

The new health care centre in Hermanus offers the full primary health care package including women’s health, rehabilitation services, curative and chronic care. Gallagher Lourens Director, Henk Lourens explains the motivation behind this healthcare architecture project: “The perception of our environment rests entirely on spatial clarity and the stimulation of our senses. Working very closely with the Green Consultant, each façade of this 5 Star Green Rated office building has been designed with integral architectural sun control to respond to each specific orientation using a combination of vertical and horizontal fins to modulate solar penetration. The latest energy efficient lighting available is used in the building and recycled water is used for irrigation while a building management system monitors the energy and water consumption of the building on an ongoing basis. While construction was underway, the policy of “reduce, re-use and recycle” was adopted in terms of the use of materials.
“The architecture also allows a high degree of flexibility for the future with the provision of numerous vertical riser ducts and a large continuous ceiling void space throughout, in order to allow maximum flexibility for service reticulation, including mechanical ventilation, fire protection services, communications and plumbing services.” Read more about this project on Architect and Builder.

Hermanus Community Day Centre

Gallagher Lourens Architects were appointed by the Department of Transport and Public Works in 2010 to consolidate three existing, smaller facilities into a more efficient and comprehensive service in Hermanus. In January 2015, the Hermanus Community Day Centre were opened to the public.
For Gallagher Lourens Architects, a key design consideration was the experience of public waiting areas, where the vast majority of a patient’s time will be spent during a visit. Architecturally and urbanistically, it is important that we strive to create environments in which people can feel comfortable, protected and welcome to encourage positive interaction with these environments and spaces.
